Who’s Erika Toda?
Erika Toda 戸田絵理香 (b. 2001) is a Japanese guitarist and songwriter based in New York. Her music draws from blues, jazz, rock, folk, and contemporary improvisation, with a focus on melodic songwriting and expressive improvisation. After moving to the United States in 2022, she studied with Peter Bernstein, Adam Rogers, and Drew Gress, and developed her voice as a guitarist and composer. She is now active in New York as a performer, recording artist, and educator.
About Yakei (夜景)
This debut album, Yakei (夜景), consists of seven original compositions and one blues standard. The title track, “Yakei,” captures Erika’s approach to songwriting with its bluesy, vocal-like melody and subtle harmonic twists. Across the album, she explores the space between the familiar and unexpected, creating melodies that feel natural and singable while drawing from a broad musical palette of blues, jazz, folk, rock, and Latin music.
